Meals and snacks can be stressful! Sometimes our k Meals and snacks can be stressful! Sometimes our kids eat, sometimes they don't eat. Sometimes they love the food, sometimes they don't touch it. Sometimes they would rather play than eat. Sometimes they eat three platefuls.

Depending on the age of your child or children, they can be going through a growth spurt, a big developmental change, simply not hungry, or just tired. It is hard to know!

One of the foundations I teach parents is the Division of Responsibility in Feeding. The basic notion is:
- The parent or caregiver is responsible for presenting the food, when to eat it and where.
- The child is responsible for whether they eat and how much.

Consider these roles for each meal and snack. You are responsible for the food and your kids are responsible for eating. We cannot force eating, just like we cannot force our kids to sleep.

When we ask a simple question - we give our kids a When we ask a simple question - we give our kids autonomy to make their own decision. When kids make a decision, they are more likely to own their decision and be happy with their choice!

In this case, either option is a vegetable, and they get to decide which they feel like eating. When they decide, they are more likely to eat it.

This is one of my favorite ways to help ease meals and snacks - ask them a "this or that" question in which you are okay with them choosing either option. It's a win-win!

Every child is different. When we communicate at t Every child is different. When we communicate at their level, in ways that make the most sense to them, we are able to fully connect.

One great way to get kids interested in foods is t One great way to get kids interested in foods is to get them in the kitchen, helping you along the way!

There is no best age to start. Some kids are interested as young as 2, and others not until they are school aged.

When kids help in the kitchen, they benefit in so many ways! They will work on their fine motor skills and have sensory experiences too. And it can be very fun for them and us as parents!

What do you say to your kids about the foods at me What do you say to your kids about the foods at meals and snacks?

You can say a lot of things. One good option: "Here you go!"

When kids are given meals and snacks regularly, they learn what to expect at meal times. It is okay to talk about the foods we are eating, to name them or describe the flavors and textures.

However, we do not want to go into detail labeling certain foods as good or bad. The truth is: food is nourishing to our bodies and we all need to eat food.

At meal times, I suggest talking about everyone's day. Connect with your kids about what is going on in their life. Mealtimes are meant to gather and enjoy food together. They are also meant to build connections with those who we are eating with whether that is family, friends, or someone else.

Cultural connections through food are rooted in family history and we can show our kids how we appreciate and value our mealtimes.

When I work with families, we discuss nutrition and ways to create healthy mealtimes. We also work to make mealtimes enjoyable for every family, in whatever ways that are most valuable to them.
